Dumbo random storyboard
- Continuing with the Dumbo fest, I’ve culled a lot of storyboard drawings from various sources (many from the earliest DVD of the film) and present in somewhat chronological order.
This, like my other Dumbo posts, is in support of Hans Perk‘s posting the drafts for Dumbo, and Mark Mayerson‘s posting the excellent Mosaics he creating for the film. See both other sites.

Wow! There’s a lot to comment on here, but first of all, I’d like to draw people’s attention to items 17 and 18, and the elusive Jumbo Sr!

Wonderful post. I love Dumbo. It’s fast becoming one of my favorite Disney features. Thank you for posting all of this wonderful artwork and storyboards. You are doing a real service to us aspiring artists.

Hi, I would like to post an entry on my blog about my own thoughts on these fascinating story sketches. Do you mind if I post copies of them, or would you rather I just linked to them on your blog?

Link to them. I had to get permission to post them, and I can’t give anyone else permission.

OK, done. Check out my blog entry at http://darmokthegreen.blogspot.com/2010/10/dumboards-part-one.html
Or, you can just read a condensed version here:
(7) does not really fit anywhere in the final story – it’s outdoors, and Dumbo already has his big ears, but the other elephants seem quite indulgent over Mrs Jumbo and her son. I wonder if it’s meant to be an earlier version of Dumbo’s birth/delivery?
(17) and (18) are very interesting – suggest a “father’s footsteps” them that never appears in the final film… neither do any references to Dumbo having a father at all (I mean, he was delivered by a stork… childbirth and conception are clearly different things in this world). Jumbo Sr is apparently at a different circus, and the other elephants say Dumbo will join him soon… are they encouraging him to go on to greater things, or do they just want him out of *their* circus?
These boards suggest a very different story from the one that finally made it to the screen… I wonder if there was any context to them or if they were just isolated ideas which people sketched down.
