Jack Davis @ PKA
- The esteemed illustrator/cartoonist, Jack Davis, did some brilliant art and design work for animation when working for Phil Kimmelman and Ass. Bill Peckman sent me the following article from Squa Tront magazine, and he added a couple of illustrations Davis did for PK&A.

All of the characters should be holding the product in hand.

Great artist.
Didn’t see a date on the article, so maybe it predates his Rankin Bass work. That may not have the quality of the advertising animation but it’s visibility is much greater.

Where’s the modern-day Jack Davis? I guess there isn’t any.
My favorite Davis cartoon is his portrait of Spike Jones and the City Slickers. It’s probably under copyright, so I won’t post it. I’m in enough copyright trouble already.
Suffice it to say, only Davis ever captured the true anarchic spirit of Spike’s band of musical maniacs in one single cartooooony illustration.
Maybe I can describe it: Spike, looking like a demented Leo Gorcey, is shooting off his six-gun in the foreground, while behind him the Slickers are “rendering” a piece of music by destroying every instrument in sight.
No, I can’t describe it, but I tried.

Very cool. Can you tell me why issue of Squa Tront? I collect jack’s work and have several pieces of animation art. Always looking for more stuff.

The issue is Squa Tront #7. This issue also has the early Harvey Kurtzman comic book story “Lucky Fights It Through” tipped in, that’s worth the price of admission alone. The collaboration of Harvey and Jack in comics was a marriage made in heaven, they always stood on each others shoulders.
