Johnston/Peet Bd
- I have an advanced board for the sequence in 101 Dalmatians wherein Pongo goes to the kitchen to comfort Perdita who’s worrying about Cruella’s threat to buy up all her pups.
This relates to Bill Peet‘s original board (posted here on April 1), but is composed of BG layouts and animation dwng cutouts. I’m posting the new board and juxtaposing it with the Peet original so you can see how it’s changed.
I also suggest you check out Mark Mayerson‘s invaluable Mosaics for this film and sequence.
This was Ollie Johnston‘s sequence, and he probably drew the dogs.
This is how the full LO board looks:

This is Bill Peet’s version of the sequence:
This is a breakdown of both to keep the images as large as I can:

Beautiful drawings!!
Thank You for all the stuff on 101 Dalmations. It’s really helpful and informative. Please keep sharing this gold with us. I’m hugely greatful.

This is an entire class session-fantastic! Thanks, Michael.
Very interesting how Ollie chose(I’d assume it was his choice)to have the camera on Pongo during most of Perdita’s very emotional lines here.
Also interesting(very, to me)is the contrast between Peet’s extremely anguished Perdy and Johnston’s much more subdued version.
But I’m saying this based on my memory and what’s here–not on having watched the sequence which I should do before commenting.

I was waiting for someone other than me to comment on that. The choice in this film (as Mark Mayerson pointed out) is clearly male oriented. Weak women, Perdita and Anita, both. This excludes, obviously, the villain(ess) Cruella deVille. Interesting that it’s certainly the choice by the animator rather than the director. (Of course, the director didn’t fight it.)
