101 Dalamatians – Seq 3 Pt 2
- With this post, I’m completing the remainder of the storyboard material loaned to me by John Canemaker. This takes us through the birth of the puppies and the reemergence of Cruella De Ville in her attempt to buy them. The introductions are done, and the story is about to turn to action.

Here’s a breakdown of the board, posted slightly larger and mor legible. This final board also featured (albeit in B&W) some cel setups from the film. They’re posted larger, as well.

Michael – Those cel setups of the maid are early designs by Tom Oreb. There’s some nice shapes in them, but the dot eyes and the rest of the face don’t really work in my opinion. It’s great to see them though and fascinating to see the ideas they explored before commiting to the final designs. Thanks for sharing!

Something I’ve wondered about “Dalmatiansâ€â€”if I remember right (I haven’t seen the film in theaters since it was last out mid-90s or so) they made this film in 1.33 (not even 1.85) pretty late in the game (’61?) and a few years after making “Sleeping Beauty†in Scope. I happen to love how beautifully “Dalmatians†is designed for this framing (if you ask me, 1.85 actually feels a little too epic for more of today’s films than not, but I realize this is largely a matter of taste!). Does anyone reading happen to know anything about how or why Disney chose to return to this ratio for “Dalmatians”?
