Conan from Toth – 1
- Bill Peckmann sent me a stash of nine extraordinarily fine illustrations by Alex Toth done for the magazine, The Savage Sword of Conan.
To fill up the post, Bill sent a number of magazine covers (front and back). However, I thought the Conan drawngs so excellent, that I’ve chosen to have them stand alone. So, I’m using these pieces – great as they are (they certainly stand alone as a post) – as a teaser for Thursday’s images of Conan. Trust me, come back if you’re a fan of Alex Toth’s work.
For part 1, Bill wrote:

When he wrote “Mime†or “Mime Time†on the cover I am guessing that he was indicating he was aping the original artist.
Sometimes, especially for comic book covers, they will write “After (original artist’s last name) and then sign it. For example, “After Raymond, © Toth 1991â€
I guess it stands out to me that Toth used “mime†because I haven’t heard imitating someone elses’ style being referred to that way.
“Mimickâ€, maybe.
“Apingâ€, sure.

The Gee, Alex tried to have as much fun exploring words as he did searching and seeking with his art brushes, pencils and pentels. He was never one to hide behind convention and repeating himself was not an easy thing for him to do.
