Kickstarter Redux
We’re still kicking, so to speak, in a Kickstarter sort of way. So, why am I passionate about POE? I read his stories and poems in high school and they made an indelible mark on my life as an artist. For me, the name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and bloody corpses walled within false chimneys. Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured my imagination, so too has Poe himself. Was he some morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles? Or is this the Poe of legend? I think that this fascination with Edgar Allan Poe, the legend and the man behind the legend, extends far beyond my own personal and artistic interest. Poe’s life and stories would make a fantastic and fascinating animated feature and I think there is a large audience out there waiting for it. Please take the time to check out the Kickstarter page, and if you can contribute anything, thank you. If not, tell your friends. It’s the friends and the friends of friends who will help us move forward.

Michael, have you tried asking for a plug in Cartoon Brew? I am pretty sure that Amid and Jerry Beck would gladly support your kickstarter campaign. I already backed up the project, but is clear that time is running out and perhaps being showcased in a high profile blog or site would be a good idea.

1) Mario, I am sure that by now either or both know about this project. I’m sure they read the Splog every so often.
While I’m sure Mr. Sporn could ask or submit something to that site, these types of projects may be things they pick or choose to put up as posts on the site’s main page.
That mentioned, surely they probably would be likely to repost a press release on their Biz sub-site. After all, this is a long established studio’s project and an announcement could be put out on various animation sites by issuing a press release.
2) I looked at the Kickstarter page and watched the animatic clip. And, I looked through this posting, too.
While the animatic and the copy on the KS page is a lot, where’s the link to the project’s/movie’s website? There’s not one in this post, the duplicate below or on the Kickstarter page–that I found easily enough.
I’m almost certain you mentioned that a dedicated project site exists. (though, perhaps I’m wrong.)
3) You have your tag for this post as “Daily Postâ€.
Also, why isn’t there a category for “Poeâ€, “Kickstarter 2012â€, etc? You might want to make it just as easy for a schmuck like me to find all of the Poe related project posts AND for you to find what you’ve put up on the Splog.
4) I’m glad you mentioned: “…It’s the friends and the friends of friends…â€
That’s always it, isn’t it?
None of really know how to continually and successfully nail that Magical Third Thing that makes things come together and work out well but what you mentioned is a HUGE part of the second thing: Who you know.
So, best to you on this. Obviously, you should know of some of the shortcomings of other attempts at KS projects. But, don’t focus and slavishly try to replicate the attempts of successful ones, too.
This is a guess (smart enough, but not entirely educated) every project is Just That Much Different from the other projects. In that regard, all those projects are just like other things in life. Like the record albums that are made, the tastes people have, etc..
Just approach it the best way you can for this particular project and hope others help in ways that can help realize something special.
Anyways….whatever, right? If anything, feature the link to the Poe site somewhere obvious here and on the KS page.
(pardon any of my sloppy writing, please.)

Mario, Brett: why not just submit the Kickstarter link for this Poe film to the Brew’s site.
Put it up on Facebook…Twitter….Posters on Lampposts…Whateverific…
If you feel inclined, pass it on to someone you know or just announce it
(which is I guess what those social media sites and services are sometimes used for.)

The Gee –
I have been posting about this everywhere I can, on Facebook, via Toon Boom and TVPaint sites, and anywhere I can!
