Toth’s “Wings of Eagles” – 2
The Wings of Eagles was a 1957 Action Adventure film directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Try to get it on Netflix; it’s one of Ford’s classics. Alex Toth was hired by Dell to create the comic version of the film. Bill Peckmann not only saved his copy of the comic but sent a copy to me to post. It’s classic Toth. Part 1 appeared here.
As a special treat, Bill Peckmann added these five pages of Doodles by Alex Toth.
Many thanks to Bill Peckmann for sharing these rare bits with us.

Extending the thanks for sharing this, too.
Perhaps I looked in the wrong places but I was unaware that comic book adaptations of movies occurred prior to “Star Wars†and even then it was comic booky and toy related adaptations that ruled the day. It is amazing that way back when so many comic book properties were developed around non-cartoon TV shows and some TV and movie personalities, like Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis, but to see a John Wayne movie adapted from back then is impressive.
What’s even more impressive is that Toth did this prior to video tape. I guess he had a script and watched the film (maybe more than once) and maybe had access to storyboards, or not. However the pre-production happened, it is nice to see.
I know this is only related to Alex Toth and may seem out of left field and if you know the current context it is kind of depressing but here’s something which may be of interest. I would like to think every one who was once an aspiring cartoonist reached out to established pros like this and made a connection of some kind. We all have stories, after all….

I think I’ll read it again. I didn’t know Dylan; only of him and his work.
