David Levine Lions
- Bill Peckmann sent me a parcel of lions and Aesop’s Fables from David Levine. These dawings are so brilliant that it’s impossible not to share them today. Enjoy.
Many thanks to Bill.
The cover ant the (enlarged) frontispiece from the book.

They don’t get any more gorgeous than this turtle and rabbit.

very lovely illustrations! they bear a strong resemblance to t.s. Sullivant’s animals, and it’d probably be a bet that Sullivant’s work was a strong influence on Mr. Levine (as on just about ANY artist who’s seen it!).
Shamefully, I must admit I hadn’t previously been aware of Levine’s work, so this inspired me to do a little looking around to find more of his art to soak in. Thanks for sharing these, and for once again highlighting the work of an artist whose work deserves to be celebrated & admired.

Levine’s work had a subtlety which kept him from being a Daumier or a Nast. It also helped him create remarkable drawings like these.
Possibly the most rewarding illustrator in history. Clearly the most rewarding of our age.
Fitting that he represents the New York Review of Books, these are the closest to literature that pen and ink has ever come.

Hilarious! I thought I’d seen all of Levine’s work, bit I didn’t know this book even existed. Thanks to you and Bill.
