DVD problems UPDATE
- I’ve taken the dvd and made a high def high res QT and put it through AfterEffects. I was able to pull every frame. The 3:2 pull down gave every fifth frame as a dupe of frame 5. This allowed the piece to expand to 30fps.
Here then is what the cycle should look like:
WHAT A DIFFERENCE !

Blaine Gibson left animation to become head of sculpture at W.E.D., where he spent the rest of his working career. Did he crave working in a 3D medium or was it due to the shrinking workload at Disney features in the early 1960′s?

As you might know, the European PAL system doesn’t use 3:2 pulldown but speeds things up a little, so that everything moves with 25 instead of 24 frames per minute (resulting in a shorter running time). That’s why the frames on RC2 DVDs usually match the original timing. Since I own most of the classic Disney features in that format, maybe I can help you out with some screen shots for future walk cycles. Feel free to contact me.

Talking about 101 Dalmatians and frame by frame scene deconstructions, take a look at this post by Pixar animator Victor Navone and click on the Pongo image to watch a quicktime scene from the movie.

That’s a great question (among many others that spring to mind) . Does anyone know how to get in touch with Blaine Gibson? He’s someone I’d love to hear or read an interview with . I haven’t purchased the most recent “Platinum” DVD release of Dalmatians yet , so I don’t know if he’s on that or not ?
He seems to have worn a lot of hats at Disney: Assistant Animator, Effects Animator, Character Animator, Sculptor/Imagineer . (in the “Illusion of Life” Thomas and Johnston tell us on page 488 that it was while animating the Effects animation alongside of Frank Thomas’s Ichabod character animation in the Sleepy Hollow sequence that Blaine Gibson determined to give up Effects Animation and switch over to character animation . He sounds like someone who was not exactly “restless” but perhaps always looking for a new challenge … maybe the move over to WED was part of that looking for something new to try . Or it might of been one of those cases of Walt demanding it . Walt seemed to have moved a lot of top talent from Animation over to work on the Parks in the late 50′s and early 60′s .
