Popeye New Year
– Happy New Year from the Museum of Modern Art.
They’ll be screening the three color Popeye shorts from the Fleischers today, next Wednesday and next Thursday.
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor 1936 17 min.
Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves 1937 17 min.
Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp 1939 22 min.
The program will be screened as follows: Tuesday, January 1, 2:00; Wednesday, January 9, 1:30; Thursday, January 10, 1:30
Here are some frame grabs from the first third of Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp to help celebrate the occasion. Despite the lack of use of their 3D camera, in this film, I love the backgrounds here. There’s no credit given, but I’m guessing that Bob Little was in charge here. The beautiful art looks similar to what they were doing on Gulliver’s Travels. I think it’s wonderful work.

I remember when I was working at Disney’s, I was talking with old Fleischer animator Dave Tendlar. When I said I was working on Aladdin, Dave replied:” I did an Aladdin once…” Then I remembered he meant the Popeye one. It was a great and inspiring film. Happy New Year Mike!

Wonderful artwork. As a kid, I was always a fan of the Popeye cartoons, but this one looks especially grand. The line drawings are remarkable. It’s a perfect way to spend New Year’s.
Also, I’ve got some new movies up on the Ghibli blog, so everyone stop on over when you can. Cheers!

“What Can I Do for You” is a terrific song, with lyrics expressing the altrusitic essence of both Aladdin and Popeye. The perspective is a tad wonky in the up angle on Popeye/Aladdin, however, an odd error for Fleischer that never bothered me as a kid.

All three Popeye specials are great. In this one, sometimes his hands are bigger than his head!
See ya

Salaami, salaami, baloney!
Beautiful images. Though my favourite visual moment in these three is in Popeye meets Sinbad, when Popeye and Wimpey come ashore. Something about the rocks and waves, the whole feeling of old book illustration come alive, but with a duck and a mincer.
