Action Analysis – March 15, 1937
- Here is yet more of the Action Analysis class notes transcribed at the Disney studio in this lesson wherein they study clips from several films including a Laurel & Hardy short and a Charlie Chaplin short. If you can get your hands on either (Netflix might have them) it’ll help you to understand the talk.
Participants include: Teacher, Don Graham, animators, Izzy Klein, Joe Magro, either Jacques or Bill Roberts and Stan Quackenbush, storyman Chuck Couch, and BG artist, Dick Anthony.
The complete body of these notes really works as a masterclass in animation for those who are interested and take the time to read them.

Action Analysis – March 3, 1937
- As we all know, Don Graham conducted night classes at the Disney Studio between 1936 and 1938. They usually revolved around a particular theme and used clips from appropriate movies, whether Chaplin or Disney’s own shorts.
In this particular Action Analysis lesson, te use of secondary motions was discussed, and clips from “Country Cousin” were screened and commented on. The participants include Izzy Klein, Joe Magro, Don Williams, Jack Hannah Dave Hilberman, Bill Tytla, Shamus Culhane, Chuck Couch, Dick Anthony and Don Strickland.
Many of the lecture series were posted on Hans Perk‘s enormously helpful site, A Film LA. As a matter of fact, you can find the previous lecture on “Primary Actions” here.

recap – Phil Dike Lecture
Hans Perk is posting a series of lectures on Layout. In August 2006 I posted the notes for the Disney afterhours lectures. To coincide with Hans, I’m recapping those notes.
- As noted yesterday, I am missing the notes to Lecture #2 of this Layout Course. - Hans Perk on his site, A Film LA, has posted the Ken Andersen LayOut Training Course from the Disney studio Nov, 1936.
Here’s the a fourth lecture that Phil Dike gave on May, 1936; it was called a “General Discussion”. Unfortunately, two of its pages were copied off kilter, pgs. 8 & 9. The copies here come courtesy of Hans Perk.

recap – Disney LO Course #3
Hans Perk is posting a series of lectures on Layout. In August 2006 I posted the notes for the Disney afterhours lectures. To coincide with Hans, I’m recapping those notes.
- The following is the Disney Layout Training Course’s 3rd meeting. Charles Philippi gave the lecture, and it’s a good one. It’s all about pans. (I posted the first lecture and don’t have the second. One is missing.)
There was a time when I was working for John Hubley on Everybody Rides The Carousel where he had asked me to design a background and setup for a package to be sent out, that day, to Bill Littlejohn for animation. Fortunately, I had just read these notes the day before, and I used what I’d learned. Hubley gave me a nice compliment, and I gave it all to Charles Philippi.
Littlejohn, by the way, did one of my favorite scenes of the entire time I was at that studio. I have the large number of drawings and will someday post some of them. Beautiful animation.
This Layout course is some 18 pages long. Since that’s a job to post all 18, I’m going to break it up into two days. Tomorrow the last half will be posted.

recap – Disney Layout Course – 1
Hans Perk is posting a series of rare lectures on Layout. In August 2006 I posted the notes for the Disney afterhours lectures. To coincide with Hans, I’m recapping those notes.
- Yhe Disney Layout Course was held after hours at the studio in 1936. The first lecture was given by Tom Codrick on May 6, 1936. I have the first lecture, the third lecture by Charles Philippi and an earlier one held by Phil Dike (though this last seems to be missing two pages.)
I hope it’ll be useful. I’ll post the next in a few days.

Tytla’s Action Analysis
– After posting the fine drawings by Bill Tytla, and following with the “Washing sequence” board drawings it’s on appropriate to offer one of the Action Analysis classes Tytla gave at the Disney studio, after hours. This one took place on December 10th, 1936 – 72 years ago today.
Tytla and Fred Moore were the leadaing animators of the seven dwarfs – supervising and handling seven wholly different personalities each with relatively little screen time to relay their individual traits.
This article is chiefly concerned with the sequence of the dwarfs gathered around the wash tub cleaning themselves for dinner.

Phil Dike LO Lecture
- As I noted yesterday, - Hans Perk on his site, A Film LA, has posted the Ken Andersen LayOut Training Course from the Disney studio Nov, 1936. I’ve posted two of these – Part I and Part III.
I have a fourth lecture that Phil Dike gave on May, 1936; it was called a “General Discussion”. Unfortunately, two of its pages were copied off kilter, so more than half of pgs. 8 & 9 are missing. Since there’s still good information in there, I’ve decided to post it anyway. I’ve had to clean it up a bit to make a couple of pages legible. It follows:

Disney LO Course #3 – pt 2
- Here’s part 2 of the Disney Layout Training Course. Charles Philippi’s lecture on pans. I posted part 1 of this yesterday.
You’ll notice that I posted the first and third lectures of this series. I don’t have the second lecture which was given by Ken Anderson. Hans Perk, who does have the notes for this lecture, promises to post them when he gets the opportunity.
Keep a watch on his site. I will.
